Turning Media Into Learning
The shows, films, music, podcasts, and news that youth already consume every day are full of moments that can spark critical thinking, self-awareness, and real conversations. The Liberation Lab helps parents, educators, coaches, and organizations turn those moments into intentional learning experiences.
We call it building critical consciousness — the ability to understand, question, and act on the forces shaping young people’s lives. And we believe it can happen anywhere a caring adult is willing to start the conversation.
Why We Built This
We’re parents who watched our kids consume hours of media every day — and saw an untapped opportunity. Every show, song, and news story they engaged with was already sparking questions and shaping how they understood the world. We just needed the right tools to meet them there.
The Liberation Lab was born from the belief that the media our children already love can become one of the most powerful classrooms they’ll ever have. We built the tools we wished existed — and now we help other parents, educators, and organizations use them too.
The Lib Lab Discussion Guide
At the heart of everything we do is the Lib Lab Discussion Guide — a ready-to-use, culturally grounded conversation tool built around a specific piece of media your youth are already watching, listening to, or talking about.
Each guide includes:
- Inquiry-driven discussion questions rooted in research-based developmental psychology
- Context and framing to help adults facilitate with confidence
- Age-appropriate guidance
- Connections to broader themes of identity, power, history, and agency

Who We Support
Critical consciousness can be developed anywhere a young person is — not just in classrooms. We support any adult who wants to initiate meaningful conversation with youth around current events, media, and lived experience.
Educators & Schools
Use Lib Lab Discussion Guides as the anchor for a single class discussion, a multi-day unit, or an ongoing media literacy thread throughout the year. We deliver customized materials and provide training to support successful classroom implementation.
Parents & Caregivers
After movie night. During a long drive. At the dinner table. You don’t need a lesson plan — you just need the right questions. Our guides help you turn everyday media moments into conversations that stick.
Youth Organizations, Coaches & Community Leaders
Whether you run an after-school program, a mentorship initiative, or a community organization, we can create materials tailored to your setting, your youth, and your goals.
Creators & Streaming Platforms
If you made something, we can help it do more. We partner with content creators and streaming platforms to build educational resources around their existing content — deepening audience engagement and extending the cultural impact of their work. A co-branded Lib Lab Discussion Guide can turn a film, series, or podcast into a full learning experience for schools, families, and communities.
What We Offer
Customized Curricular Materials
We build discussion guides and supporting materials tailored to your specific context — the media your youth are consuming, the ages you’re working with, and the goals you’re trying to reach. Our developmental psychologists ensure every resource is grounded in what we know about how young people learn and grow.
Training & Implementation Support
Our commitment doesn’t end with delivery. We provide training, resources, and ongoing support to help you implement materials with confidence and lasting impact — through webinars, one-on-one consultations, or other formats that work for you.
Our Approach
We combine research-based psychology, deep cultural knowledge, and modern tools to create materials that are impactful, relevant, and genuinely responsive to the communities we serve.
Collaborative Partnership
We work closely with educators, parents, and organizations to understand the unique needs of the communities they serve. Every solution is co-created with your goals and values at the center.
Culturally Responsive Design
Our materials are grounded in an understanding of historical truth, heritage, and identity. We prioritize creating content that reflects and affirms the lived experiences of Black and Brown youth — because that’s who we’re building this for.
Human Expertise, Enhanced by Technology
We use advanced tools — including AI-assisted analysis — to work efficiently and at scale. But the expertise, judgment, and cultural grounding behind every guide comes from our team of developmental psychologists and practitioners. Technology helps us move faster; our people ensure the work is right.
Let’s Build Something Together
Tell us what your youth are watching, listening to, or talking about — and we’ll help you turn it into a learning moment.
Whether you’re a teacher building a unit, a parent looking for a conversation starter, an organization serving youth, or a creator wanting to extend your content’s impact — we’d love to hear from you.
